The Sacred Healing Art -

“Storytelling Art Creates Revelations of Enlightening Delight,” is how Skywalker Payne, R.N. opens her storytelling performances to prepare audiences to feast in the sacred healing power of storytelling. As a child, Skywalker went to sleep with imaginative stories of adventure and romance while she spent her days reading history, biography, and classical fiction. As a young adult, creative expression found outlet in choreography and poetry as a performance artist. Audiences in community theatres, art centers, and art festivals in Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and Greenville, S.C. enjoyed her original productions.

In 1994, Skywalker discovered storytelling as she sought a college major and graduated Summa cum Laude in 1998 from Metropolitan State College of Denver with a B.A. in storytelling. As a professional teller she performed at the annual Black Arts Festival in Denver for three years, the Denver Public Library, and did a six month engagement at the Gemini Tea House in Denver. In addition, with her husband Brian, she produced several storytelling programs on the Denver Public Access Station.

In 2000, she and Brian moved to Des Moines, Iowa and opened Darshan Studios Storytelling Theatre and Comic Art Museum. As a roster artist for the Iowa Arts Council and member of the Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau she performed throughout Iowa. In addition she performed at the DuSable Museum in Chicago and at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

As a nurse working in the heart of the Navajo Nation, Skywalker is developing performances that unite the historical spiritual motivation of Florence Nightingale, the visionary activism of Margaret Sanger, and world traditional stories with music and song into an enchanting and enlightening experience.

Available for bookings Spring 2009.
