Using her unique, dramatic style, Melanie Zimmer has been presenting original and traditional tales in schools, and libraries, at festivals and for television audiences for over a decade. As a live performer, she has entertained both in intimate settings, and to crowds of up to twelve thousand large.

Melanie Zimmer also performs as Dancing Bear Puppet Theater. She is a member of the Puppetry Guild of Upstate New York, and the Puppeteers of America. Currently she is offering two half hour puppet shows in her itinerant bright red theater with its hand carved golden bears and three trap doors. The Littlest Pirate is a ridiculous tale in which young Hubert is kidnapped by the evil pirate Eddie Snickerbucket. Hubert’s mother, Mrs. Swampgrass begins her search for her son in a rowboat encountering a talking star, singing frogs and sea monsters. In the end, Hubert and his mother are reunited, and find buried pirate treasure, but soon discover their love for each other is the greatest treasure of all.

Maiyarap’s Magic Dust is a magical tale from Thailand featuring beautifully carved and beaded marionettes. Maiyarap, a giant and Lord of the Underworld, attempts to create a pot of magic dust to make the army of Lanka invinsible, but as he has not lived a virtuous life, his meditation is interupted by dancing women, fighting elephants and golden lions. During the tale, Hanuman, the magic monkey dances and frolics with the audience. In the end, the magic dust is ineffective and Hanuman saves the day. This piece is performed in the style of Thai classical dance. Following the performance, if desired, the audience may learn Maiyarap’s dance.

Melanie Zimmer is based in New York State, and performs storytelling, puppetry, and workshops for kids and adults in schools, libraries, festivals, and art centers as well as in a variety of other venues throughout the Northeast. She also offers a processional dragon and processional jester as well as walk around puppetry for fairs and festivals.
