Karen Rae Kraut started out as a actress and singer, appearing in more than 100 plays and musicals. She fell in love with storytelling in 1990 and has been telling professionally every since. She specializes in world folktales that highlight the humor and heroism of ordinary people. English-Spanish bi-lingual programs are another specialty. Karen intersperces her stories with songs, riddles and poems accompanied by guitar, kazoo and rainstick. She teacher storytelling for the University of California, Riverside Extension Early Childhood Education Program and is a teaching and touring artist for the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, CA. She has performed and presented workshops in libraries, schools and community settings from California to East Tennessee. She presented her workshop "Story Hour Stretches with the Brain in Mind" at the National Storytelling Conference in Chicago in 2003. Karen has grade specific programs available to coordinate with social studies curriculum from first to sixth grade. She has a master’s degree in storytelling from East Tennessee State University. Karen’s award-winning CD, Cooler Water Cora and Other Stories is 64 minutes of stories, songs and poems for the whole family to share! She received the National Parenting Publications Honors Award in 2004 and an iParenting Media Award for Audio Excellence in 2005.
She can be seen as lead singer and storyteller of the cowgirl duo The Prairie Flowers. Karen tells, sings, yodels and plays washtub bass, a must-see! Her newest show is "Little Heroes" a zany re-telling of "The Giant Who Had No Heart," a Norwegian folktale with a twist. Karen and musician side-kick Lina Hayek provide a unique mix of music, movement, story and song. Audience participation abounds.
