KOTO TALES - JAPANESE TALES WITH LIVE MUSIC!
Koto master and storyteller Elizabeth Falconer combines the folk art of storytelling with the classical art of koto music with her own original style of puppetry to create "Koto Tales".
Elizabeth’s numerous recordings have received Parents’ Choice, NAPPA, Iparenting and Storytelling World Awards. She perform frequently in schools, libraries, and at festivals throughout the Northwest, and is artist in residence for several Seattle-area organizations. She earned a master’s license from the Sawai Koto School in Tokyo, a BA in Japanese from the University of Oregon, and holds a Ph.D. in International Education.

"I first started doing this, when, after studying koto music in Japan for over 12 years, we adopted two boys (ages 3 and 5) and I saw how strongly they were affected by stories. At first, I saw myself as a musician, and the stories were a sort of accessory. But very quickly, I realized how much the stories had to offer, how they connect with something quite deep in all of us. Soon, the stories were my focus, and I found myself looking for ways to use my koto to enhance them. What an adventure that has become, as a musician: I hadn’t realized the many shapes my instrument and my music could take, if I let my instrument and the stories lead the way. This turn of events has also re-awoken the writer in me, and I greatly enjoy creating my own versions of the folktales. I greatly look forward to where each new story will lead me.
